Ministry To Continue Monitoring H1N1 Infection Trend - Liow

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 19 (Bernama) -- The Health Ministry will continue to monitor the spread of Influenza A(H1N1) in the country although the number of cases had dropped, Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said.

The ministry would also continue issuing reports on the disease and ensure that preventive measures remained in place, he added.

"The number of H1N1 cases in September has dropped compared to the number in August but that does not mean that we can take it easy now as according to the World Health Organisation, the H1N1 pandemic in Malaysia is still at level six," he told reporters at the ministry's Aidilfitri celebration here Monday.

Liow said that the death toll from the H1N1 remained at 77 and that the number of patients warded at the intensive care units had also dropped.

Nevertheless, the minister reminded the public to continue observing personal hygiene to prevent the second wave of the H1N1.

Meanwhile, Liow said the first batch of the H1N1 vaccine would arrive in Malaysia from Britain at the end of this month and would be given to 200,000 frontliners and those in the high-risk group.

"The vaccine will be distributed nationwide. However, the frontliners would be vaccinated first," he added.
